Drama began in ancient Greece and went through five major periods: Greek drama, focused mainly on man’s struggle with good and evil and often featuring the Greek Gods; Drama of the Middle Ages, which had strong religious influences due to the power of the church; Renaissance drama, a freer time when plays and theater became more secular and explored historical themes; 17th and 18th century drama, a time when Shakespearean plays were at their height where comedy became more sophisticated and we saw the comedy of manners introduced; and modern theater which we may consider as 19th to 21st century – this was the beginning of world drama and the “problem play”, a kind of drama focusing on social issues.
